Buyers must check the processing capacity (m³/h) to ensure it matches the vessel's bilge water generation rate. Look for three-stage separation technology (gravity, coalescence, and adsorption/filtration). Additionally, the unit must include a certified 15ppm Bilge Alarm (Oil Content Monitor) with a data logging function that records date, time, and oil content for at least 18 months.

High-quality coalescer filters and activated carbon or organoclay cartridges determine the efficiency. While cheaper filters reduce initial costs, washable or long-life media significantly lower the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by reducing the frequency of hazardous waste disposal and replacement part procurement.

The unit should have a compact footprint for engine room installation and be compatible with the ship's Power Management System (PMS). Ensure the supplier provides RS485 or Ethernet interfaces for remote monitoring and that the pump system is a positive displacement pump to prevent emulsification of the oil-water mixture.

Always request the Class Certificate (e.g., CCS, ABS, DNV, or LR). Cross-reference the certificate number directly on the Classification Society's official website. For transactions on Made-in-China.com, prioritize Audited Suppliers whose business licenses and production capabilities have been verified by third-party agencies like SGS or Intertek.

The primary risks are corrosion from sea air and mechanical shock. Specify Seaworthy Packing (vacuum sealing + wooden crates) in the contract. Use CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) terms to ensure the supplier handles insurance, or if using FOB, ensure your marine insurance covers loading and transit risks.

For high-value marine equipment, avoid 100% upfront payments. Use a 30% deposit and 70% balance payment structure. The balance should only be released after the buyer receives the Bill of Lading (B/L) and a Third-Party Pre-shipment Inspection (PSI) report confirming the 15ppm alarm functionality.

Ensure the contract includes a Global Warranty (typically 12-24 months) and a guarantee for the availability of spare parts for at least 10 years. Ask the supplier if they have authorized service engineers in major port hubs to assist with commissioning or emergency repairs.
