For architectural projects, verify that the surface is free of oil and grease to ensure uniform weathering.

Prices are primarily driven by global iron ore fluctuations, the thickness of the plates, and the level of processing. Standard hot-rolled plates are cheaper, while pre-oxidized (pre-rusted) surfaces or laser-cut patterns carry a premium. Additionally, bulk volume discounts typically apply for orders exceeding 20 tons, where unit prices can drop by 10-15% compared to LCL (Less than Container Load) orders.

Buyers should ensure products meet ISO 9001 for manufacturing quality and EN 10025-5 for European projects. If the steel is used in construction, it must comply with local building codes such as the CE marking (Europe) or ASTM standards (USA). Always request third-party inspection reports (SGS or BV) to verify the steel grade before the final payment is released.

Corten steel typically ranges from 1.5mm to 50mm. Thinner sheets (1.5mm - 3mm) are ideal for facades and decorative screens, while thicker plates are required for bridges and heavy infrastructure. Custom dimensions often result in higher scrap rates, so choosing standard mill sizes (e.g., 1250mm x 2500mm) is the most economically feasible strategy for reducing the total cost per square meter.

The biggest risk is material substitution, where suppliers provide standard carbon steel instead of genuine weathering steel. Since they look identical when new, you must perform a chemical analysis test. Another risk is surface contamination during sea freight; salt air can cause uneven rusting. Ensure the contract specifies seaworthy packaging with moisture-proof wrapping.

Focus on long-term cooperation rather than a one-off transaction. Ask for tiered pricing based on annual volume. You can also negotiate Incoterms; while FOB is standard, asking for CIF might be more convenient if the supplier has better relationships with shipping lines.
