Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from a reputable third-party laboratory like SGS or Intertek. Pay close attention to the cadmium and arsenic levels, as international standards (especially in the EU) strictly limit heavy metal content. Ensure the granules are treated with anti-caking agents to prevent clumping during long-term storage or high-humidity sea transit.

DAP is primarily used as a basal fertilizer for broad-acre crops like wheat, corn, and rice due to its high nutrient concentration. Its alkaline reaction around the granule makes it highly effective in acidic or neutral soils, providing a quick burst of nitrogen and long-lasting phosphorus for root development. It is also used in industrial applications as a fire retardant and yeast nutrient.

Suppliers must adhere to ISO 9001 for quality management and ISO 14001 for environmental standards. For specific markets, ensure compliance with the EU Fertilizer Regulation (2019/1009) or the FCO (Fertilizer Control Order) for the Indian market. Always verify that the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for safe handling and transport.

The most significant risks include nutrient degradation due to moisture and price volatility in the global phosphoric acid market. To mitigate this, use watertight bulk liners or 50kg/1000kg UV-stabilized PP bags. Always include a pre-shipment inspection clause in your contract to verify weight and nutrient analysis before the balance payment is made.

Focus on volume-based pricing tiers and payment security. For large orders, negotiate for Letter of Credit (L/C at sight) to protect your capital. Ask for seasonal discounts, as fertilizer prices often dip during the 'off-season' of the supplier's domestic market. Mention your interest in a long-term strategic partnership to secure priority production slots during peak demand.

DAP is usually shipped in bulk carriers or 20ft containers. If using containers, ensure the use of heavy-duty PE inner bags to prevent corrosion of the container walls. For shipping to landlocked regions or specific ports, confirm the supplier's experience with Incoterms like CIF or CFR, and ensure they provide marine insurance covering 'All Risks'.

Fertilizers are often subject to export quotas or taxes imposed by producing countries to ensure domestic food security. Always check the latest export policy of the origin country (e.g., China's CIQ inspection requirements) as these can cause significant lead-time delays. Ensure all customs tariff codes (HS Code 31053000) are correctly documented to avoid fines.
