Understanding leather quality is critical for pricing. Full-grain leather is the highest quality, retaining the natural grain and offering maximum durability. Top-grain leather is more pliable and consistent as the top layer is sanded, making it ideal for high-end commercial use. Split leather or Genuine leather (lower layers) is often used for sides and backs to reduce costs, while Bonded leather should be avoided for premium projects due to its low durability and tendency to peel.

For high-traffic environments, ensure the leather has a high rub count (Martindale test) and excellent colorfastness to light (ISO 105-B02) to prevent fading. The internal frame should be constructed from kiln-dried hardwood or reinforced steel to prevent warping. For cushioning, specify high-resiliency (HR) foam with a density of at least 2.2 lb/ft³ to ensure the furniture maintains its shape over years of heavy use.

Compliance varies by destination market. For the US market, products must adhere to TB117-2013 for flame retardancy and CARB Phase 2 for formaldehyde emissions in wood components. For the EU market, leather must be REACH compliant, ensuring it is free from harmful chemicals like Hexavalent Chromium (CrVI). Always request third-party lab test reports from recognized bodies like SGS or TÜV.

Request a cross-section sample of the material used. Authentic leather will have a fibrous structure, whereas synthetic alternatives have a fabric or plastic backing. Additionally, ask the supplier for Leather Working Group (LWG) certification, which audits the environmental and traceability standards of the tannery.

The biggest risks include moisture damage (mold) during sea transit and quality inconsistency between the sample and bulk order. To mitigate this, ensure the supplier uses desiccant bags and anti-mold stickers in the packaging. Always conduct a Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) to verify that the leather grain and color match the approved master sample.

Leather is a commodity with fluctuating prices. Negotiate a tiered pricing structure based on volume. If you cannot meet a high MOQ for a specific color, suggest using 'stock leather' colors that the factory already has in inventory, which can reduce the MOQ to as low as 5-10 units per style.

Use secure payment terms such as a Letter of Credit (L/C) for very large volumes or Escrow-based services provided by reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com. Never pay 100% upfront; a standard industry deposit is 30% T/T, with the remaining 70% balance paid against the Bill of Lading (B/L) after quality verification.

Furniture is high-volume, so Full Container Load (FCL) is significantly more cost-effective than Less than Container Load (LCL) to avoid damage from other cargo. Utilize KD (Knock-Down) packaging where possible to increase loading capacity, but ensure the assembly instructions are clear and all hardware is high-tensile strength.
