The most critical factor is the type of plastic used. PP (Polypropylene) is the industry standard for its high impact resistance and flexibility, while ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is preferred for high-precision architectural moulds due to its superior dimensional stability and surface finish. Ensure the material includes UV stabilizers to prevent brittleness if the moulds will be stored or used outdoors.

Check the wall thickness of the mould; for standard paving stones, a thickness of 3mm to 5mm is recommended to prevent deformation under the weight of wet concrete. A high-quality mould should withstand 400 to 800 casting cycles depending on the material grade. Ask for the Shore D hardness rating to ensure the mould is rigid enough to hold its shape but flexible enough for easy demoulding.

Look for moulds with a draft angle (taper) of at least 0.5 to 1.0 degree, which significantly reduces friction during stripping. The internal surface should have a high-gloss or mirror-polished finish to ensure the concrete comes out smooth and to minimize the need for excessive release agents. Reinforced ribbing on the exterior is also essential to prevent the sidewalls from bulging.

Suppliers should ideally hold ISO 9001:2015 certification for quality management. For the final concrete products to meet construction codes, the moulds must be verified for dimensional tolerance (typically ±0.5mm). Ensure the plastic materials comply with REACH or RoHS if you are importing into the EU to avoid hazardous chemical restrictions.

Request pre-shipment inspections (PSI) and specifically ask the inspector to check for warpage using a flat surface gauge. Ensure the supplier uses palletized packaging with edge protectors; bulk-loading plastic moulds in containers without support often leads to bottom-layer crushing due to the weight.

Focus on the weight of the plastic per unit rather than just the unit price. Suppliers often lower prices by using recycled regrind or thinning the walls. Negotiate based on a guaranteed cycle life and request a tiered pricing structure where the price drops by 10-15% for orders exceeding 2,000 pieces.

Since plastic moulds are lightweight but high-volume, you will likely be charged based on volumetric weight. To optimize shipping costs, ask the supplier if the moulds are stackable/nestable to reduce the total CBM (Cubic Meters). For large orders, FOB (Free On Board) terms are recommended so you can utilize your own freight forwarder to manage sea freight costs.
