Ensure the product is 100% pure and natural, free from synthetic additives like ethyl anethole. Request a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) report to verify the chemical profile and purity.

For food-grade applications, the oil must meet FCC (Food Chemicals Codex) or FDA standards. If used in pharmaceuticals, it should comply with USP (United States Pharmacopeia) or EP (European Pharmacopoeia). Additionally, ensure the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch.

Steam distillation is the industry standard for preserving the therapeutic properties and aromatic profile of anise. While CO2 extraction offers a superior, solvent-free profile with higher potency, it is generally more expensive. Avoid oils extracted using chemical solvents if your application is for food, beverage, or aromatherapy.

Anise oil is sensitive to light and oxidation. It must be stored in amber glass bottles or fluorinated HDPE drums for bulk transport. Ensure the packaging is airtight and stored in a cool, dark environment to prevent the oil from crystallizing or losing its aromatic efficacy.

Anise oil has a relatively low flash point and may be classified as Class 3 Flammable Liquid or Dangerous Goods (DG) depending on the concentration. You must ensure the supplier provides a Dangerous Goods Declaration and uses UN-certified packaging to avoid customs seizures or airline rejection.

Look for Audited Suppliers who have undergone on-site inspections by third-party agencies like SGS or Bureau Veritas. Check their export history and whether they hold ISO 22000 or GMP certifications, which are critical for liquid chemical and food-grade exports.

Negotiate based on Anethole purity levels rather than just volume. Request a pre-shipment sample from the actual production batch and stipulate in the contract that the bulk delivery must match the sample's GC-MS profile. Use Trade Terms like FOB or CIF clearly to define where the risk transfers.

Pure anise oil naturally solidifies/crystallizes at temperatures below 15°C (59°F). This is a sign of high purity (high anethole content). Ensure your logistics provider understands this and advise your warehouse to gently warm the containers in a water bath upon arrival to return the oil to a liquid state without damaging its properties.
