Scrap mattress foam is a highly versatile secondary raw material. It is primarily used for rebonded foam production (carpet underlay, gym mats), furniture padding, acoustic insulation panels, and protective packaging. In the automotive industry, it is often processed into sound-dampening components and seating fillers.

Buyers must prioritize foam density (kg/m³) and composition. Ensure the scrap is categorized by type: Polyurethane (PU) foam, Memory foam, or Latex. You should also specify the cleanliness level (free from wood, metal, or fabric contaminants) and whether the foam is dry and mold-free, as moisture significantly increases weight and degrades quality.

Even for scrap materials, compliance is vital. Verify if the foam contains Flame Retardants (FR) and if it meets standards like CFR 1633 (US) or BS 5852 (UK). For chemical safety, request confirmation that the material is free from restricted substances under REACH (EU) or RoHS regulations to avoid legal issues during customs clearance.

The economic value is heavily dependent on compression ratios. To maximize container space, ensure the supplier uses high-pressure baling machines to achieve a density of at least 20-25 tons per 40HC container. Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by factoring in the yield rate—higher contamination levels result in more waste and lower production efficiency.

The biggest risk is material contamination (hidden trash or moisture inside bales). To mitigate this, use third-party inspection services like SGS to conduct a 'loading supervision' and verify the net weight versus gross weight. Always source from reputable suppliers on Made-in-China.com who have verified factory videos showing their sorting process.

Negotiate based on grade and color. Pure white or light-colored PU scrap usually commands a higher price than mixed-color scrap. Request a fixed price per ton based on a specific moisture content (e.g., <5%). For long-term contracts, seek a volume-based discount of 5-10% for orders exceeding 5 containers per month.

Use Secured Payment terms or Letters of Credit (L/C) for large volumes. Avoid 100% upfront payments. A standard practice is 30% deposit and 70% against the Bill of Lading (B/L) copy. Ensure the supplier provides a Certificate of Fumigation if the scrap is packed with wooden pallets to prevent customs delays.

Many countries have strict waste import bans (e.g., China's 'National Sword' policy). Ensure the material is classified as 'Recyclable Raw Material' rather than 'Waste'. Check the HS Code (typically 3915.20 or 3921.13) requirements of your destination country to ensure you have the necessary import permits and environmental licenses.
