When sourcing used life rafts, the most vital standard is SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea). A life raft typically has a service life of 15 to 20 years. Buyers should request the original manufacture date and the service history log. Key technical checks include the integrity of the buoyancy tubes, the condition of the CO2 inflation cylinder (which requires hydrostatic testing every 5 years), and the expiry dates of the internal survival pack (rations, water, flares, and medical kits).

Selection depends on the vessel's operation area. Throw-overboard rafts are standard for most commercial vessels, while Davit-launched rafts are required for ships where the embarkation deck is high above the waterline. For offshore operations, ensure the raft is Class A (Ocean-going), which includes an insulated floor and larger survival packs, compared to Class B (Coastal) rafts.

Buyers must specify the person capacity (e.g., 6, 10, 25, or 50 persons) and the stowage height (the maximum height above the waterline the raft can be dropped from, usually 18m to 36m). Additionally, confirm the canopy type (self-righting or conventional) and the material composition, prioritizing polyurethane (PU) coated fabrics over PVC for better cold-weather flexibility and durability.

Life rafts are classified as Class 9 Dangerous Goods (UN2990) because they contain compressed gas cylinders and pyrotechnic signals. You must use a freight forwarder experienced in DG (Dangerous Goods) handling. Ensure the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and a Dangerous Goods Declaration to avoid customs seizures or heavy fines at the port of entry.

Implement a staged payment plan: a deposit to start the order, and the balance only after a third-party inspection report (such as SGS or BV) confirms the rafts have been serviced and repacked correctly.

Demand that the cost of the latest annual service and certification be included in the quoted price. If buying in bulk, ask for spare hydrostatic release units (HRU) to be included as part of the deal.

Some countries have strict import bans on used rubber or textile-based safety goods to prevent environmental dumping. Before ordering, consult your local customs broker to confirm that 'Refurbished Marine Equipment' is allowed. Ensure the Harmonized System (HS) Code 8907.10 is used correctly on all commercial invoices to avoid tariff misclassification.
