It is critical to request a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) to confirm the absence of hazardous heavy metals like lead or cadmium, especially if the glass is sourced from electronic waste (e-waste) or older buildings.

You must specify the grain size (mesh size), ranging from fine powder to large 20mm chunks. Purity levels are the most important economic factor; high-quality cullet should have a purity rate of 99% or higher. Additionally, check the moisture content, as excess water increases shipping weight and can cause clumping in industrial feeders, leading to operational inefficiencies.

Since broken glass is a low-value, high-weight commodity, logistics costs often exceed the product value. To optimize costs, source in Full Container Loads (FCL) and use heavy-duty jumbo bags (FIBC) to prevent leakage. Compare the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) by factoring in import duties and the cost of local inland transportation from the port to your facility.

The biggest risk is contamination. A small percentage of ceramic, metal, or organic waste can ruin an entire batch of molten glass or weaken construction materials. Always demand a pre-shipment inspection (PSI). Another risk is regulatory classification; some customs authorities may classify broken glass as 'waste' rather than a 'raw material,' which could lead to legal complications under the Basel Convention.

Focus on consistency of supply and grading. Ask for a sieve analysis report to prove size uniformity. Negotiate based on volume-tiered pricing; for example, a 50-ton order should yield a 10-20% discount compared to a 10-ton order. Ensure the supplier agrees to secure packaging in UV-resistant woven bags to prevent tearing during long-term sea transit.

Use Incoterms like FOB or CIF to clearly define where the risk transfers. For transaction security, utilize secured payment terms or Letters of Credit (L/C) for large volumes. Ensure the shipping documents clearly state the glass is 'Recycled Glass Cullet for Industrial Use' to avoid being flagged as hazardous waste. Always verify the supplier's export license specifically for recycled materials.
