Ostrich leather is typically graded from Grade I to Grade IV. Grade I hides must be free of scratches, holes, or bacterial damage in the four main quadrants. Specify the thickness, usually ranging from 0.8mm to 1.2mm for garments and accessories. Ensure the tanning process uses chrome-free or vegetable tanning if your brand targets eco-conscious markets, and verify colorfastness (ISO 11640) to prevent dye transfer on finished luxury goods.

As ostriches are farmed animals, the most critical document is the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) certificate, although most commercial ostrich species are now exempt or under specific appendices, many customs still require Veterinary Certificates and Certificates of Origin. Ensure the supplier complies with REACH (EU) or TSCA (USA) regarding chemical residues like Lead or Hexavalent Chromium in the tanning agents.

The Saddle/Matte finish is ideal for a classic, understated look in luxury footwear and briefcases, offering better scratch resistance. The Glazed/Shiny finish is preferred for high-fashion handbags and small leather goods (SLGs) to highlight the quill texture. For apparel, request a Nappa finish, which provides the extreme softness and drape required for leather jackets or skirts.

The biggest risk is Grade Mismatch, where the bulk shipment does not match the sample quality. Always use a third-party inspection service to verify the grading of every single hide before final payment. Another risk is Customs Seizure due to improper documentation; ensure the supplier provides a detailed Packing List that specifies the scientific name (Struthio camelus) and the tannery's registration number.

Pricing is usually quoted per hide or per square decimeter. Negotiate based on selection (grading) ratios; for example, a 'Table Run' (TR) includes a mix of grades at a lower price, whereas 'Selected Grade I' will carry a premium. For initial orders, seek a Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) of 5-10 hides per color to test market response. Mention your intent for long-term seasonal collections to secure better volume discounts of 10-15% on orders exceeding 50 hides.

Ostrich leather is sensitive to humidity and pressure. Hides should be rolled (not folded) with the grain side facing inward and separated by acid-free tissue paper to prevent quill 'bruising' or dye migration. Use air freight for high-value exotic leathers to minimize the time spent in uncontrolled environments like shipping containers. Ensure the outer cartons are double-walled and moisture-sealed.
