Boron-Containing Polyethylene Shielding Sheets Contain 5%-50% Boron

BPE is a composite shielding material made by uniformly dispersing boron compounds (typically boron carbide, B4C) into a polyethylene matrix. It is primarily designed to effectively absorb and moderate thermal and epithermal neutrons.

Key advantages include high effectiveness for neutrons, lightweight and durable properties compared to concrete, ease of fabrication using standard tools, and being clean, safe, non-toxic, and lead-free.

Selection depends on your neutron spectrum. Lower content (1%-5%) is common for moderation, while higher content (10%-30%) is used for maximum absorption in high-flux areas or limited spaces. Engineers can assist with selection.

BPE provides minimal gamma shielding. For environments with both neutron and gamma radiation, we recommend a composite design, such as layering BPE with lead or steel.
