A fence post driver is a manual or mechanical tool used to drive fence posts (typically metal T-posts, U-posts, or wooden stakes) into the ground. It consists of a heavy metal sleeve or cylinder with handles, designed to slide over the post and deliver downward force through repeated lifting and dropping.

Wear safety gloves and steel-toe boots. Ensure the post is aligned vertically before driving. Keep hands and feet clear of the driver's path. Lift using your legs, not your back, to avoid strain. On uneven ground, have a helper stabilize the post if needed.

It is best suited for metal T-posts and similar slender stakes. For large wooden posts or concrete posts, consider using a mechanical post driver or digging holes and setting with concrete.

Stop immediately. The post may have hit a rock or hard layer. Remove it and check the ground, or try a different spot. For metal posts, use a driver with a guide sleeve to keep the post straight.

Typically, 1/3 of the post length should be underground for stability. For a 6-foot post, aim for 2 feet deep. Adjust based on soil type and fence purpose.
