A Roots flow meter (also called gas rotary piston flow meter) is a positive displacement flow meter that accurately measures the volume of gas passing through a pipeline by trapping and counting fixed volumes of gas with two interlocking rotors. It is the industry standard for custody transfer applications.

They can measure almost all clean and slightly dirty gases, including natural gas, LPG, propane, biogas, nitrogen, argon, compressed air, coal gas and industrial gases.

Roots flow meters have higher accuracy at low flow rates, wider turndown ratios, and are less affected by pipeline vibration. They are ideal for custody transfer and fluctuating load applications, while turbine meters are better for high-velocity, steady-flow scenarios.
