Deck Screws #10×3" Epoxy Coated C1022 Steel Type-17 Slash Point

Use epoxy-coated C1022 steel screws with ACQ-compatible coating, not standard zinc. Fasto FA-DS103-BZ features a multi-layer epoxy coating chemically inert to ACQ/CA/MCQ treatments zero black staining around holes after 2-year field tests. 1,000-hour salt spray tested per ISO 9227. T25 Torx drive eliminates cam-out at high RPM. Available in bronze and tan to match common deck board colors.

Not with Type-17 slash point screws. Fasto deck screws feature a self-drilling slash tip that cuts through Ipe (Janka 3,510), Cumaru (Janka 3,540), and composite decking without splitting. The twin-thread design clears chips efficiently. For Janka >3,000 woods at board edges (within 1 inch), a countersink pilot is still recommended. Always use Torx drive .Phillips will cam-out in dense hardwoods.

Use 2-1/2' or 3' screws for 5/4' boards (actual 1') this gives ~1-1/2' penetration into the joist. For 2x boards (actual 1-1/2'), use 3' or 3-1/2' screws. The rule is minimum 1' penetration past the board into framing. Fasto offers all lengths from 1-1/4' to 4' in #8 and #10 diameters. For 2x6 joists, 3' is the sweet spot for most 5/4' and 2x deck board installations.

Standard spacing is 2 screws per joist intersection. For 16' joist spacing with 5-1/2' wide boards: approximately 3 screws per linear foot. That's about 0.75 screws per sq ft. A 300 sq ft deck needs ~225 screws. Add 10% for waste. Fasto 137pcs box covers ~180 sq ft at standard spacing. For wider boards (>6'), use 3 screws per joist intersection adjust quantity accordingly.

#8 (4.2mm) is lighter duty, suited for 1x deck boards, fascia trim, and railings. #10 (4.8mm) is the standard for structural deck fastening higher shear strength (1,800+ N) and better holding power in joists. #10 is recommended for 5/4 and 2x deck boards, stairs, and ledger connections.
