Q:Which emulsion scoop coater size should I use?
A:
Most screens are measured to the outside diameter with about 4 inches of frame not needing coating. For a 20x24 inch screen, use a 16 inch coater. For 18x20 inch screens, use 14 inch. For 23x31 inch screens, use 18 inch. For 25x36 inch screens, use 20 inch.
Q:How do I coat the substrate side of the screen?
A:
Begin your coating pass at the bottom of the screen. Firmly support the screen as you press the edge of the scoop coater against the mesh. Move slowly up the screen and slow down to a stop near the top. Twist the scoop coater upwards and off of the mesh.
Q:What is the difference between thin and thick coats?
A:
Thinner coats are desirable on higher mesh counts (200mesh and above) for half-tones and finer detail like 4-color process. Thicker coats are usually used for spot color on lower mesh counts (below 200mesh).
Q:How do I finish coating the ink well side?
A:
After coating the substrate side, flip the screen quickly and repeat the process on the ink well side using the same technique.
