Q:Working principle

The VFD viscous damper is a velocity dependent passive energy dissipation seismic mitigation device. Filled with highly stable silicone oil medium inside, it converts kinetic energy generated by earthquakes and wind induced vibration into heat for dissipation through fluid throttling friction. It produces no additional static stiffness and will not alter the natural vibration period of the structure.

Q:Its limitation

Demanding sealing requirements. Oil leakage leads to total loss of damping performance, requiring strict manufacturing and inspection. Viscosity of silicone oil is temperature sensitive; special damping medium is needed for extreme high and low temperature environments. Only dissipates vibration energy, no limiting function or lateral stiffness. Extra limiting components shall be equipped if displacement limiting is required.
