Q:What is low pressure dissolved acetylene?
A:
It is acetylene gas dissolved in acetone inside a steel cylinder filled with porous solid filler. Acetylene is stored in dissolved form under low working pressure, instead of being stored as pure compressed acetylene gas.
Q:Why must acetylene be stored as dissolved acetylene instead of compressed pure acetylene?
A:
Pure acetylene under pressure can easily decompose violently and cause explosion, even without oxygen. Dissolving acetylene in acetone and using porous filler suppresses this decomposition risk, making safe storage and transportation possible.
Q:Can acetylene cylinders be placed horizontally during use? Why?
A:
No. If laid horizontally, liquid acetone may flow out together with acetylene gas. Acetone will damage the regulator and cause uncontrolled gas flow, which may lead to fire or explosion. Cylinders must be kept upright when working.
Q:What distance requirements between acetylene cylinder and oxygen cylinder / open flame?
A:
The distance between acetylene cylinder and oxygen cylinder shall be no less than 5 meters. The distance from any open flame or heat source shall be at least 10 meters. If the 10m requirement cannot be met, effective heat shielding measures must be installed.
Q:What should be checked before using low pressure dissolved acetylene equipment?
A:
Check cylinder appearance for damage, corrosion or deformation; verify valid inspection period.
Check cylinder valve, pressure regulator, hose and connections for leakage.
Confirm the cylinder is placed upright and secured against falling.
Keep the cylinder away from high temperature, sunlight, impact and oil contaminants.
