Forging transforms solid metal from one shape to another through plastic forming (hot or cold), such as extrusion or punching. Casting transforms liquid metal into a solid shape by pouring molten metal into a mold. Forging is a solid-to-solid process, while casting is a solid-liquid-solid process.

Quality is determined by external observation (checking dimensions, surface defects like cracks or wrinkles) and internal inspection (analyzing chemical composition, macroscopic/microscopic structures, and mechanical properties like tensile strength and hardness using specialized instruments).

The process for circular forgings includes pier roughening, elongation, punching, and expanding. Free forging uses a horse screw to expand holes, while ring rolling uses rolling. Both methods achieve the desired shape through solid-state deformation.
