It appears as a dark blue to black powder. It is soluble in water, producing a blue to navy blue solution. It is slightly soluble in ethanol, but insoluble in other organic solvents. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it shows a brilliant blue color that turns purple-reddish blue upon dilution.
