Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is the mainstream option. Coal based GAC is suitable for removing various organics with a long service life. Coconut shell GAC fits premium low dust drinking water. Its iodine value is 900-1000 mg/g. Powdered activated carbon (PAC) is used for seasonal odor control and emergency spill treatment.
Q:What principle does activated carbon use to remove residual chlorine from water?
A:
Activated carbon removes free chlorine and chloramine via catalytic reduction on its surface, converting them into harmless chloride. It eliminates chlorine smell and protects membranes, resins and UV disinfection equipment. A qualified GAC bed can reduce residual chlorine below 0.1 mg/L.
Q:Can granular activated carbon remove disinfection by products such as THMs and HAAs?
A:
Yes. GAC adsorbs natural organic matter (NOM) precursors which generate disinfection by products. Removing these precursors before final disinfection can reduce the formation of THMs and HAAs, ensuring effluent meets drinking water standards.

A:
