Industrial grade CMC has a very wide range of applications, mainly including petroleum drilling (mud thickener), ceramic glazes (suspending agent), coatings (thickening and water retention), textile sizing (size agent), building mortars (water retention and thickening), daily chemical detergents (anti-redeposition agent), papermaking (surface sizing), and more.

Low viscosity CMC (200-500 mPa.s) is suitable for dispersants, sizing agents, and systems requiring high flowability. Medium viscosity CMC (500-1000 mPa.s) is suitable for general thickening, water retention, and suspension applications. High viscosity CMC (1000-2000+ mPa.s) is suitable for systems requiring high thickening and high water retention, such as mortars and drilling fluids. It is recommended to select the appropriate viscosity grade based on specific process requirements.

DS refers to the average number of hydroxyl groups substituted by carboxymethyl groups on each glucose unit in the cellulose chain. Higher DS means better water solubility and salt resistance. Generally, DS >= 0.65 meets most industrial application requirements. High DS products offer better stability in saline environments, making them suitable for drilling fluids and other high-salt applications.

CMC is a high molecular weight polymer. Key points for dissolution: Add CMC slowly into water under stirring to avoid lump formation from adding too much at once. Warm water (40-60C) is recommended to speed up dissolution, but temperature should not exceed 80C to avoid degradation. Stir thoroughly until completely dissolved with no undissolved particles. For applications requiring rapid dissolution, quick-dissolving grades are available.

The core difference lies in purity standards. Food grade CMC requires higher purity (>= 99.5%), stricter heavy metal and microbial control, and is priced higher. It is suitable for food, pharmaceuticals, and other applications with strict safety requirements. Industrial grade CMC has relatively lower purity (85%-95%), but offers better cost advantages, suitable for petroleum, building materials, ceramics, and other applications where purity requirements are less strict.
