They require initial priming liquid in the reservoir. Due to the reservoir, they may be larger than standard models, causing space issues. They need to be close to production lines to avoid depleting the liquid reservoir during self-priming.

In principle, all positive displacement pumps (gear, lobe, vane, diaphragm) are self-priming due to close-tolerance parts. However, dry running can cause overheating, seal wear, or cavitation. Consult the manufacturer before using them in dry-running applications.

Standard centrifugal pumps are not self-priming as they cannot evacuate air. However, with modifications (like a reservoir surrounding the impeller), they can become self-priming. They still require liquid in the housing to start and cannot operate dry for extended periods.

Common causes include air leaks in the suction line, debris plugging the impeller eye, the pump being air-bound (no air release line or pressurized discharge), plugged recirculation ports, or excessive suction lift for the pump's speed/impeller diameter.
