Inspect the rubber edge for cracks, especially where the rubber meets the steel plate. Early signs include more vibration through the operator seat, metallic knocking from the drum area when switching vibration modes, or visible separation between rubber and steel. Most fleets inspect buffers every 500 hours and replace them as a complete set when any one shows cracking.

A typical single drum roller uses four to six buffers - two or three on each side of the drum, connecting the drum assembly to the main frame. The exact count depends on the model. We recommend replacing all buffers at the same time because they share the same vibration hours; replacing only the cracked one leaves the others near failure.

We do not recommend it. The 60 plus or minus 5 Shore A hardness is matched to the machine weight and vibration frequency. A softer buffer will sag under static load and misalign the drum; a harder one transmits more vibration to the frame and operator. Use the specified hardness for best isolation and longest life.
