65Mn contains 1% Mn, good hardenability and elasticity, low price, for general springs, spring washers, agricultural springs; 60Si2Mn contains 2% Si + 1% Mn, better hardenability, higher tempering stability, higher elastic limit, for auto leaf springs, coil springs and other important springs. 60Si2Mn price 20-30% higher than 65Mn.

Q:What heat treatment for spring steel?

Spring steel generally uses quenching + medium temp tempering (350-500C), obtaining tempered troostite with high elastic limit and fatigue strength. 65Mn quench 830C + temper 400C; 60Si2Mn quench 870C + temper 450C; 50CrVA quench 850C + temper 400C. Specific process adjusted per spring size and performance requirements.

Q:What are features of 50CrVA?

50CrVA contains 1% Cr + 0.2% V, V refines grains improving toughness, Cr improves hardenability and high temperature strength. 50CrVA maintains high elastic limit at 300-400C, suitable for valve springs, safety valve springs and other important springs at higher working temperatures. Price 30-50% higher than 60Si2Mn.

Spring steel has high carbon content (0.52-0.65%), poor weldability, prone to cracking, generally not recommended for welding. If must weld: 1) Preheat 250-350C before welding; 2) Use matching strength low-hydrogen electrode; 3) Immediately 600-650C temper after welding; 4) Important springs recommend mechanical connection instead of welding.
