Hardness similar to porcelain or glass. A regular 5-6mm slate board can handle having dozens of times its own weight on top of it. That's why we can cut it so thin and will not break easily. But it is likely to break if hit sharply by something hard or dropped on a hard surface. If you treat it like your kitchen dish or glass, it will be perfectly fine.

In order to preserve your slate board for years to come, wipe it down with a drop or two of good grade mineral oil about twice a year. Mineral oil helps protect the integrity of the slate and maintains a slightly polished look. Be aware of oven and microwave are notsuitable.
