Q:How do "ears, folds" appearing on the surface of seamless steel pipes form respectively?
A:
Ears: During hot rolling, if the pass opening is too large or the incoming material is overly wide, metal will squeeze out of the roll gap to form flash, which is mostly caused by improper roll adjustment.
Folds: Ears or scratches already exist in the previous pass, and they are pressed into the base metal in the next pass, showing linear delamination; it is also seen when surface defects of the perforated blank are rolled and closed subsequently.
