For a horizontal split-case fire pump, sit on the motor facing the pump. If suction is from the right and discharge is to the left, it is right-hand (clockwise). The opposite indicates left-hand (counter-clockwise) rotation. Ensure both parties view the casing from the same side.

Motors and engines are sized according to UL, FM, and NFPA 20 standards to operate on any point of the fire pump curve without exceeding the service factor. They are often sized to take advantage of a 1.15 motor service factor, allowing operation beyond 150% of rated capacity if needed.

A flow meter loop tests hydraulic performance but does not test the water supply integrity. For initial start-up, flowing water through the system with hoses and Playpipes is recommended to ensure the entire system's integrity. A flow meter loop returning to the water supply can test both if properly calibrated.
