For a horizontal split-case fire pump, sit on the motor facing the pump. If suction is from the right and discharge to the left, it is right-hand (clockwise). The opposite is true for left-hand (counter-clockwise). Ensure both parties view the casing from the same side.

Motors and engines are sized according to UL, FM, and NFPA 20 (2013) to operate on any point of the curve without exceeding the service factor. Unlike domestic pumps, fire pump motors may operate beyond 150% rated capacity and are often sized using a 1.15 service factor, except for variable speed inverter duty motors.

A flow meter loop tests hydraulic performance but NOT the water supply integrity. For initial start-up, flowing water through the system is insisted upon to ensure integrity. If the loop returns to the water supply (e.g., above-ground tank), both pump and supply can be tested, provided the meter is calibrated.
