Fire pumps meet stringent NFPA 20, UL, and FM requirements for reliability. They must produce specific flow rates and pressures (40+ PSI) and maintain at least 65% pressure at 150% rated flow. Casing integrity must withstand hydrostatic tests of three times max operating pressure, and performance curves are strictly regulated.

For a horizontal split-case fire pump, sit on the motor facing the pump. If suction is from the right and discharge is to the left, it is right-hand (clockwise). The opposite indicates left-hand (counter-clockwise) rotation. Ensure both parties view the casing from the same side.

Motors and engines are sized according to UL, FM, and NFPA 20 standards to operate on any point of the curve without exceeding the service factor. Unlike HVAC pumps, fire pump motors are not always sized 'non-overloading' and may utilize a 1.15 service factor, except for variable speed inverter duty motors.

A flow meter loop tests hydraulic performance but does not test the water supply integrity. For initial start-up, we insist on flowing water through the system using hoses and Playpipes to ensure the entire system's integrity. A flow meter loop is only acceptable if it returns to the water supply (e.g., an above-ground tank) to test both pump and supply.
