For a horizontal split-case fire pump, sit on the motor facing the pump. If suction is from the right and discharge is to the left, it is right-hand (clockwise). The opposite indicates left-hand (counter-clockwise) rotation. Ensure both parties view the casing from the same side.

Motors and engines are sized according to UL, FM, and NFPA 20 standards to operate on any point of the fire pump curve without exceeding the service factor. Unlike domestic pumps, fire pump motors are often sized to take advantage of a 1.15 motor service factor, allowing operation beyond 150% of rated capacity.

A flow meter loop tests hydraulic performance but does not test the water supply integrity. For initial start-up, flowing water through the system via hoses and Playpipes is required to ensure system integrity. A flow meter loop is only acceptable if it returns to the water supply, allowing both pump and supply testing.
