Fire pumps meet stringent NFPA 20 and UL requirements for reliability under demanding circumstances. They must produce specific flow rates and pressures (40 PSI or greater), with performance curves ensuring shut-off head is 101% to 140% of rated head. They undergo rigorous testing for casing integrity, bearing life, and shaft deflection.

For a horizontal split-case fire pump, if you are sitting on the motor facing the pump, it is right-hand (clockwise) if suction is from the right and discharge is to the left. Left-hand is counter-clockwise. Both parties must view the casing from the same side.

Motors and engines are sized according to UL, FM, and NFPA 20 standards to operate on any point of the curve without exceeding the service factor. They are often sized to take advantage of a 1.15 motor service factor, allowing operation beyond 150% of rated capacity.

A flow meter loop tests hydraulic performance but not the water supply integrity. For initial start-up, flowing water through the system with hoses and Playpipes is required to ensure system integrity. A loop returning to an above-ground tank can test both pump and supply if the meter is calibrated.
