Two Sides Untrimmed Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat

Chopped strand mat usually contains glass strands cut to 25-50 mm (1-2 inches). The random distribution of these lengths gives the mat isotropic properties, so it delivers uniform strength in all directions of the laminate plane.

Chopped strand mat of emulsion breaks down faster in styrene, giving extremely fast wet-out-ideal for hand lay-up. Powder dissolves more slowly, providing higher mechanical strength and better stability in hot or humid storage, but requires slightly longer wet-out time.

Chopped strand mat can cause fiber print if the laminate is rolled too thin, if resin is too low in viscosity, or if excessive pressure is applied during cure. To avoid this, maintain a minimum resin layer of 0.3-0.5 mm above the mat, or use a low-profile resin.

Chopped strand mat stored in a dry, clean area at 10-35 deg C and <70% RH typically has 12-18 months shelf life. Humidity causes the binder to degrade or the glass to become moisture-sensitive, leading to poor wet-out and low mechanical strength.
