It acts as a coagulant. When added to water, it dissolves and forms positively charged aluminum hydroxide flocks. These flocks attract and neutralize the negative charges on fine, suspended particles like dirt, bacteria, and other impurities. This process causes the particles to bind together into larger, heavier clumps called 'floc,' which then settle out of the water or are easily filtered, resulting in clearer water.

'Alum' often refers to potassium alum (potassium aluminum sulfate), a specific type of hydrated double sulfate salt. Aluminum sulfate is a more general and widely used industrial chemical. While both can be used as coagulants, aluminum sulfate is more common in large-scale water and wastewater treatment, whereas potassium alum is often found in food processing, cosmetics, and traditional uses like pickling and leather tanning due to its different properties.

The sludge, primarily composed of aluminum hydroxide and the trapped impurities, must be properly handled and disposed of. It is considered non-hazardous in many cases. Common disposal methods include dewatering (e.g., in a landfill) or, increasingly, beneficial reuse in applications such as soil amendment or as a component in brick-making and cement production, following appropriate environmental regulations and testing.

It is primarily used as a coagulating agent in water purification and wastewater treatment. It is also widely used in the paper industry as a sizing agent, as a mordant in textile dyeing, and in gardening to acidify soil for plants like hydrangeas.
