Drilling fluid jets exit ports around the reamer body and wash cuttings up the bore annulus as the reamer advances. Larger chips are pumped up and out first by the circulation. Finer debris stays suspended until the entire slurry is lifted and separated at the surface.

When new, reamers can produce holes within an inch or less of their true diameter. As they wear, surface finish degrades somewhat but stays smooth enough for grout pipes or TBM shell installation. Segmented designs maintain consistency better than random models.

While most reaming is straight up/down or horizontal, some specialized reamers have bend angles and downhole steering motors installed to excavate short radius curved tunnels or shafts in difficult ground where directional control is important.

Newer reamer models are sealed and flood-resistant to ream unstable ground while controlling large water inflows. The drilling fluid circulation helps flush cuttings from the very bottom of deep flooded holes. But excessive water can slow reaming due to reduced torque and drag on rods.
