Proper PPE like steel toe boots, hard hats, gloves, and safety glasses should always be worn. A drilling rod safety zone should be established and only authorized personnel allowed near rig. Falling objects protection may be required overhead.

Common tests for threaded connections include torque testing during makeup to specified values, tension/compression testing, galling tests, and pressure testing. Non-destructive methods like ultrasonic or X-ray are also used to inspect for defects.

Visual inspection checking for corrosion, scratches, pits, dents, cracks. Connection inspection with feeler gauge to check threads for wear. Diameter measurement to check wall thinning. Magnetic particle testing may also be used periodically for more in-depth inspections.

Heavy duty tapered rings placed at various points in drill string help centralize pipes and protect vulnerable connection areas from abrasion and damage from contact with borehole walls during drilling and tripping operations.

Downhole survey tools electronically measure drill string azimuth, inclination and depth at various points and log this data in memory modules. Known as MWD (measurement while drilling) when integrated into bottomhole assembly, or LWD (logging while drilling). Data downloaded post-trip.
