Usually there are two ways for connecting the motors. Before connection, please make sure you use Star connection or Delta connection. You can see the connection diagram as left picture.

Use the diode position of the multimeter. Point the red pen to the three-phase output terminals (U, V, W) and the black pen to '+'. A reading of about 0.4V is normal. Short circuit or open circuit means damage.
