Artemia brine shrimp manufacturers

The most critical metric is the hatching percentage (HP), which should ideally be above 90% for premium grades. Additionally, evaluate the hatching efficiency (HE), measured by the number of nauplii produced per gram of cysts (e.g., >250,000 to 300,000 nauplii/g). Ensure the cysts are properly dried (moisture content <5-8%) and vacuum-packed to maintain long-term viability and prevent metabolic exhaustion.

Artemia from different regions, such as the Great Salt Lake (USA), Bohai Bay (China), or Central Asian salt lakes, vary in their Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acid (HUFA) content, particularly EPA (20:5n-3). For marine larvae, high-EPA strains are essential. If the strain is low in HUFAs, you must plan for enrichment protocols (bio-encapsulation) using specialized emulsions or algae to meet the nutritional requirements of your specific aquaculture species.

Buyers should demand a purity level of 99% or higher, meaning the product is free from sand, heavy metals, and excessive shell debris. The cyst diameter (typically 230-270 microns) and nauplii size are also vital, as smaller nauplii are required for the first feeding of certain delicate fish and shrimp larvae. Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch to verify these parameters.

Artemia cysts are biologically active; they must be stored in a cool, dry environment (below 4°C) for short-term use, or frozen (-18°C to 0°C) for long-term storage to preserve hatching rates. Once a container is opened, it should be used quickly or resealed under vacuum/nitrogen to prevent oxidation and moisture absorption, which can lead to a rapid decline in hatching performance.

The primary risk is quality degradation during transit due to high temperatures in shipping containers. Always specify temperature-controlled shipping or avoid ordering during peak summer months if refrigerated containers are not used. Another risk is adulteration, where high-grade cysts are mixed with low-grade ones; mitigate this by using third-party inspection services like SGS to verify the hatching rate before final payment.

Artemia cysts are often classified under HS Code 0511.91. You must ensure the supplier provides a Veterinary Health Certificate and a Certificate of Origin. Check your local regulations (e.g., USDA/APHIS in the US or EFSA in the EU) as some countries require specific import permits for biological materials to prevent the introduction of pathogens like Vibrio.

Focus on long-term volume contracts rather than one-off purchases to secure stable pricing in a volatile market. Request pre-shipment samples from the specific batch number you will receive. Negotiate staggered payment terms (e.g., 30% deposit, 70% after third-party hatching test results) to ensure the supplier is accountable for the biological performance of the product.

Utilize Secured Trading Services on Made-in-China.com to protect your funds until delivery is confirmed. For shipping, choose reputable freight forwarders experienced in handling aquaculture feeds. Ensure the packaging includes desiccant packs and is heavy-duty vacuum-sealed to withstand the physical rigors of cross-border logistics and prevent air leakage which ruins the cysts.
