If you are sourcing for the Indian market, BIS certification is required, while PSE is necessary for Japan.

Request a technical datasheet and verify the Grade A cell status; avoid 'Grade B' or refurbished cells which have lower capacities and shorter lifespans. Ask for Cycle Life Testing reports (e.g., capacity retention after 500/1000 cycles). It is highly recommended to use third-party inspection services to perform a discharge capacity test and internal resistance check on a random sample from the production lot.

For Lithium batteries, the BMS is the 'brain' that ensures safety. Ensure the BMS provides protection against over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, and short circuits. For high-end industrial use, prioritize a BMS with SMBus, RS485, or CANbus communication protocols for real-time monitoring and active cell balancing to extend the overall pack life.

Batteries are strictly regulated as Class 9 Dangerous Goods. You must ensure the supplier provides a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and a Dangerous Goods (DG) Declaration. For shipping from China, use freight forwarders experienced in DG handling. Note that shipping costs for batteries are significantly higher than general cargo due to specialized packaging and handling requirements.

The most effective strategy is to source from verified manufacturers on Made-in-China.com who offer Audit Reports. Always request a pre-shipment inspection (PSI). Use Trade Assurance or secure payment terms where a portion of the payment is withheld until the third-party lab confirms the capacity and discharge rates match the agreed specifications.

Focus on the Price per Watt-Hour ($/Wh) rather than just the unit price to compare value accurately. Negotiate for a warranty period of at least 2-5 years for LiFePO4 products. For long-term partnerships, ask for transparency regarding the cell brand (e.g., CATL, BYD, EVE, or Grade A domestic brands) to ensure consistent quality across different batches.

Be aware of Anti-Dumping Duties (ADD) or specific tariffs like Section 301 in the US, which can add significant costs to Chinese-made batteries. Always check the HS Code (typically 8507 series) against your country's latest tariff schedule. Consider DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms if you want the supplier to handle the complexities of customs and duties, though FOB/CIF offers more control over the logistics chain.
