Ensure the casing undergoes Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), such as Ultrasonic or Magnetic Particle Inspection, to detect internal flaws that could compromise the well's structural integrity.

Engage a third-party inspection agency (such as SGS, BV, or Intertek) to conduct a pre-shipment inspection. They should verify dimensional tolerances, thread gauging, and hydrostatic testing results. Never release the final payment until the MTC (Mill Test Certificate) is verified against the heat numbers stamped on the actual pipes.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the price per ton. Negotiate for bundled pricing including couplings and protectors. Given the volatility of steel prices, consider locking in rates with a deposit or using a formula-based pricing model linked to global steel indices. Casing is prone to surface rust and thread damage. Insist on VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) oil coating and heavy-duty steel or plastic thread protectors. For sea freight, ensure the pipes are bundled with steel straps and utilize wooden dunnage to prevent movement. Specify FOB or CIF terms clearly to define where the risk of loss transfers.

Check for Anti-Dumping (AD) and Countervailing Duties (CVD) on steel pipes originating from specific countries. For example, the US and EU often have high tariffs on Chinese steel. Consult with a customs broker to determine the correct HS Code (usually 7304 or 7306) and evaluate if the final landed cost is still economically feasible compared to local sourcing.
