When sourcing from China, prioritize solid hardwoods like Paulownia, Pine, or Rubberwood for durability. For high-end antique styles, look for Zitan or Rosewood replicas. Ensure the MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) used in backing meets E1 or P2 environmental standards to avoid formaldehyde off-gassing. For the mirror component, specify copper-free silver mirrors with a thickness of at least 4mm to 5mm to prevent oxidation and distortion.
Look for traditional techniques such as hand-carved floral patterns (e.g., lotus or peony), gold leaf gilding, and lacquerware finishes. For modern 'New Chinese' styles, brushed aluminum or electroplated stainless steel in champagne gold are popular. Ensure the joinery uses mortise and tenon structures or high-strength V-nails to prevent corner separation during climate changes.
For the US market, ensure compliance with CARB Phase 2 for wood products and Lead-in-substrate limits for painted frames. For the EU, products must adhere to REACH regulations regarding chemicals in coatings. If the frames include glass, request tempered glass certification or shatter-proof film application to meet safety standards for home decor.
Request a cross-cut test report for the paint adhesion to ensure it won't peel. For the mirror, verify the salt spray test results (typically >240 hours) to ensure the edges won't turn black in humid environments like bathrooms. Ask for high-definition (HD) float glass to ensure a 1:1 reflection ratio without 'funhouse' warping.
Fragile items require ISTA-3A or 6A drop-test packaging. Insist on five-layer corrugated outer cartons, expandable polystyrene (EPS) corner protectors, and honeycomb board buffers. For bulk sea freight, products should be palletized with shrink wrap to prevent shifting and moisture ingress.
Focus on MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) flexibility for different sizes; many suppliers allow mixing 3-5 designs within one 20GP container. Negotiate based on Total Landed Cost, and request a 5-10% discount for unbranded 'white label' packaging if you handle your own branding. Always use Made-in-China.com's Secured Trading services to protect your deposit.
Verify if the supplier has an ISO 9001 certification and a dedicated dust-free painting room, which is critical for a smooth frame finish. Check their monthly production capacity to ensure they can scale; top-tier manufacturers should produce at least 50,000 units per month to guarantee supply chain stability.
Be aware of Lacey Act requirements in the US or EUTR in Europe, which require documentation of the wood's origin. Check the HS Code (typically 7009.92 for framed mirrors or 4414.00 for wooden frames) to determine specific tariff rates and anti-dumping duties that may apply to Chinese timber products in your region.
