Prioritize Brushless DC (BLDC) technology over brushed motors for higher torque-to-weight ratios and zero maintenance. A high-quality motor should achieve an energy efficiency rating of 85-90%. Check for stepless speed regulation and GPS-based anchor lock functions if the motor is intended for fishing or precision maneuvering.

The biggest risk involves battery shipping regulations (Class 9 Dangerous Goods) if the motor is bundled with power cells. To mitigate this, many buyers source the motor and batteries separately. Additionally, ensure the supplier uses reinforced sea-worthy packaging with internal shock absorption, as damage to the propeller shaft or internal magnets during transit can render the unit unusable.

Focus on OEM/ODM capabilities if you require custom shaft lengths or branded housings. Request a sample unit for sea trials before committing to a bulk order. Negotiate for spare parts kits (propellers, pins, and seals) to be included in the initial 20ft/40ft container load, which reduces long-term maintenance friction for your end customers.

Always utilize secured payment terms and consider third-party pre-shipment inspections. Specifically, request a load test video where the motor is run at full throttle in a test tank to verify RPM and heat dissipation.
