Packaged tea manufacturers

Selecting the right packaged tea requires a balance of sensory quality, shelf-life stability, and packaging integrity. Buyers should prioritize suppliers that provide detailed harvest dates (Flush) and specific origin certifications (e.g., Darjeeling, Fujian, or Uji). Ensure the tea leaves are uniform in size and color, which indicates consistent processing. For packaged goods, multi-layer foil lining or vacuum-sealed tins are essential to prevent oxidation and moisture ingress, preserving the volatile aromatic compounds for at least 18-24 months.

Compliance is the most critical barrier in the tea trade. Suppliers must provide MRL (Maximum Residue Limit) reports to ensure pesticide levels meet the standards of the destination country (e.g., EU Regulation 396/2005 or US FDA standards). Key certifications to look for include HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), ISO 22000, and GFSI-recognized schemes. If targeting the health-conscious market, verify USDA Organic or EU Organic certifications through valid transaction certificates.

The packaging must serve as a functional barrier. For tea bags, specify the material: food-grade nylon, PLA (corn starch-based biodegradable), or non-heat-sealed paper. Ensure the mesh size allows for optimal water circulation (pyramid bags are preferred for whole-leaf tea). For retail boxes, check the GSM (Grams per Square Meter) of the cardstock to ensure structural integrity during sea freight stacking. UV-resistant coatings on the outer packaging are recommended to prevent color fading under retail lighting.

Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch. This should include moisture content (ideally below 7% to prevent mold), ash content, and sensory evaluation scores. For premium grades like Matcha, specify the particle size (microns) and L-theanine content. Professional buyers should request pre-shipment samples (PSS) to conduct a 'cupping' test, comparing the sample's liquor color, aroma, and 'mouthfeel' against the agreed-upon gold standard.

The primary risks include pesticide residue non-compliance, which can lead to total shipment destruction by customs, and flavor degradation due to poor temperature control during transit. To mitigate this, use Made-in-China.com's Secured Trading services and insist on third-party inspections (like SGS or Intertek) at the loading port to verify that the batch matches the approved sample.

Focus on volume-based pricing tiers and packaging customization (OEM/ODM) costs. Negotiate for free samples for new seasonal harvests and ask for a 5-10% discount on annual contracts with scheduled releases. Ensure the contract specifies reimbursement clauses if the tea fails laboratory testing upon arrival in the destination country.

Tea is highly sensitive to odors and moisture. Always specify 'Food Grade' containers and ensure the tea is not shipped alongside strong-smelling goods (like spices or chemicals). For long-haul sea freight, use desiccant poles inside the container to prevent 'container rain.' For high-value specialty teas, Air Freight is recommended to maximize freshness and market shelf-life.

Utilize the Audit Reports available on Made-in-China.com to verify the factory's existence and production capacity. Always use Escrow-based payment terms or Letters of Credit (L/C) for large initial orders. Avoid direct wire transfers to private accounts; ensure the beneficiary name matches the company name on the business license.
