Tussah silk manufacturers

Unlike mulberry silk, Tussah silk (wild silk) is known for its shantung texture and natural honey-gold hue. Buyers should specify the momme weight (mm), typically ranging from 12mm to 30mm depending on the application. Ensure the fiber length is consistent to prevent pilling, and verify the denier count to match your specific weaving or knitting requirements. For high-end garments, a Grade A or higher rating is essential to ensure minimal impurities.

To ensure consumer safety and environmental responsibility, prioritize suppliers with OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, which guarantees the silk is free from harmful chemicals. If your brand focuses on sustainability, look for the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). For entry into the EU market, ensure compliance with REACH regulations, and for the US market, verify that the products meet FTC labeling requirements for fiber content identification.

Request a burn test report or perform one: genuine silk smells like burning hair and leaves a brittle ash. For Tussah specifically, check for colorfastness to rubbing and light (minimum Grade 3-4) since wild silk absorbs dyes differently than cultivated silk. Evaluate the tensile strength; Tussah silk is generally more durable and abrasion-resistant than mulberry silk, making it ideal for upholstery and heavy outerwear.

Tussah silk is highly valued in interior textiles (curtains and upholstery) due to its rugged beauty and in luxury fashion for its unique matte luster. Functionally, it offers superior breathability and moisture-wicking properties. Its natural tannin content makes it more resistant to UV degradation compared to other silks, which is a critical selling point for outdoor-adjacent home decor.

The primary risk is material substitution, where synthetic polyester 'silk-look' fabrics are passed off as wild silk. Another risk is batch inconsistency in natural color, as Tussah silk's shade depends on the wild silkworm's diet. To mitigate this, use Made-in-China.com's Secured Trading services and insist on pre-shipment inspections (PSI) to verify that the bulk order matches the approved golden-brown sample.

Tussah silk is rarer than mulberry silk, so Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs) may be higher for custom-dyed batches. Negotiate based on raw material market indices. For large volumes (over 500 meters), aim for a 10-15% discount. Suggest a staged payment plan (e.g., 30% deposit, 70% upon presentation of the Bill of Lading) to maintain leverage over quality control.

Silk is sensitive to moisture and odors. Ensure the supplier uses moisture-proof PE inner packaging and sturdy outer cartons. For shipping to regions with high humidity, include desiccant silica gel packs. When shipping from China, Air Freight is recommended for high-value finished silk goods to reduce transit time, while Sea Freight (LCL/FCL) is more economical for raw fabric bolts, provided the containers are climate-controlled.

Always conduct transactions through verified channels. Utilize the Audit Reports available on Made-in-China.com to check the supplier's factory capacity and legal status. Avoid direct wire transfers to private accounts; instead, use escrow-based payment systems that hold funds until the shipping documents are verified, ensuring protection against non-delivery or fraud.
