Wholesale crab claw manufacturers

When evaluating crab claws, the primary focus should be on meat fill (yield) and freshness. High-quality claws should have a meat fill rate of at least 80-90%. Look for 'Glazing' levels, which is the ice coating used to prevent freezer burn; standard industry glazing is typically 10-20%. Ensure the product is 'Single Frozen' (frozen once at sea or immediately at the plant) rather than 'Double Frozen' to maintain texture and flavor integrity. For species like King Crab or Snow Crab, verify the grading (e.g., 6/9, 9/12 count per pound) to ensure size consistency for your target market.

Compliance is non-negotiable in seafood sourcing. You must ensure the supplier holds HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) certification, which is a global requirement for seafood safety. For entry into major markets, look for ISO 22000 or BRC (British Retail Consortium) standards. Additionally, to meet sustainability demands and legal import requirements (like the U.S. SIMP or EU IUU regulations), verify that the supplier provides a Catch Certificate and is ideally certified by the MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) for wild-caught products.

The integrity of the Cold Chain is critical. Suppliers must guarantee a constant temperature of -18°C (0°F) or lower throughout storage and transit. Packaging should consist of heavy-duty corrugated master cartons with internal polyethylene liners to prevent moisture loss. For high-end retail, request vacuum-sealed (IVP) packaging to extend shelf life and prevent oxidation. Always ask for temperature data logger records to be included in the shipment to verify that no thawing occurred during transport.

Understanding the processing style is vital for market alignment. Cocktail Claws are partially de-shelled with the cap removed, leaving the pincer attached—ideal for high-end catering and appetizers. Snap & Eat (Scored) Claws are pre-cut or 'scored' around the shell, allowing end-consumers to break them easily by hand—these are preferred for retail and buffet-style dining. Ensure your purchase order specifies the scoring depth to avoid meat damage while ensuring ease of peeling.

The biggest risks are weight fraud (excessive glazing) and species substitution. To mitigate this, use third-party inspection services (like SGS or Intertek) to perform a 'de-glazed weight' check before final payment. Always use Secure Payment terms or Letters of Credit (L/C) to ensure funds are only released upon verification of shipping documents and quality certificates. Sourcing through reputable platforms like Made-in-China.com allows you to vet Audited Suppliers who have undergone verified business license and facility checks.

Seafood prices fluctuate based on seasonal harvests and quotas. It is wise to negotiate Volume-Based Pricing where the unit price drops as you move from LCL (Less than Container Load) to a Full 20ft or 40ft Reefer Container (FCL). For shipping, CFR (Cost and Freight) or CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) are common, but ensure the Insurance Policy specifically covers 'Reefer Breakdown' or 'Temperature Deviation' to protect against cargo loss.

Required documentation typically includes the Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, and a Health Certificate issued by the exporting country's fishery authority. Depending on the destination, you may also need a Certificate of Origin (CO) to benefit from preferential tariffs under Free Trade Agreements. Ensure all labels comply with the destination country's laws, including Country of Origin, Scientific Name (e.g., Paralithodes camtschaticus), Net Weight, and Expiration Date.
