Focus on mold precision and paint application. High-quality figures should have seamless joints (for articulated figures) and no visible flash or mold lines. Inquire about the painting process (hand-painted vs. spray-painted) and the use of UV-resistant coatings to prevent fading. For collectibles, the level of detail in the sculpt and the accuracy of the prototype-to-mass-production transition are critical performance benchmarks.

For play-scale toys, prioritize durability and articulation range (points of articulation or POA). For adult collectibles, focus on interchangeable parts (heads, hands, weapons) and display stability. If the figure includes electronics (LEDs or sound), verify battery compartment safety and battery type regulations for international shipping.

This is the most critical risk in the toy industry. You must verify that the supplier holds a valid licensing agreement from the IP owner (e.g., Disney, Bandai, or Marvel). If you are producing original designs, ensure the supplier signs a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and a Non-Compete Agreement to prevent your molds from being used for unauthorized 'back-door' production.

The primary risks include IP infringement seizures by customs, quality inconsistency between samples and bulk orders, and fragility during transit. To mitigate these, always use third-party inspections (like V-Trust or QIMA) before final payment and ensure the supplier uses double-walled corrugated export cartons with internal blister packaging to protect delicate parts.

Start by requesting a sample run to test the mold quality. Negotiate a staged payment plan, such as 30% deposit and 70% after a successful pre-shipment inspection. For long-term partnerships, ask for mold ownership rights if you are paying for custom tooling, and seek volume-based rebates if your annual order quantity exceeds a specific threshold.

Action figures are often 'volumetric' heavy. For small batches or high-value collectibles, Air Freight or Express (DHL/FedEx) is preferred for speed and safety. For bulk retail orders, Sea Freight (LCL or FCL) is most economical.
