Asphalt paper is sensitive to temperature; it can become brittle in extreme cold and tacky or soft in extreme heat. Ensure the supplier uses anti-sticking agents (like fine sand or talc) on the surface. For storage, rolls must be kept upright in a dry, ventilated area away from direct sunlight to prevent 'bleeding' of the bitumen and deformation of the rolls.

In humid or high-rainfall regions, prioritize breathability (perm rating) alongside water resistance. The paper should allow vapor to escape from the roof deck to prevent rot while blocking liquid water. Check the fiber base material quality—high-quality organic wood pulp provides better saturation capacity than recycled paper scrap.

The biggest risks are moisture damage and physical deformation. Since asphalt paper is heavy and sold in rolls, improper palletization can cause rolls to flatten, making them unusable. Always insist on vertical pallet loading with shrink-wrap and edge protectors. Additionally, ensure the container is free of leaks to avoid water damage during sea transit.

Focus on volume-based pricing and weight consistency. Since asphalt paper is a commodity, prices fluctuate with crude oil (bitumen) costs. Negotiate a price adjustment clause for long-term contracts. Request a pre-shipment inspection (PSI) to verify the actual weight per roll, as some suppliers may reduce the paper thickness to lower costs.
