Since Balsa is a natural timber product, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification is essential to prove sustainable sourcing, especially for EU and North American markets. Additionally, ensure the supplier provides a Phytosanitary Certificate to comply with international IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) standards, preventing the cross-border spread of pests.

Check for surface smoothness; high-quality sheets should be sanded with 220-grit or higher to reduce the need for further processing. Inspect the edges for laser-cut charring or saw-blade fraying. For bulk orders, verify that the adhesive used in laminated sheets is waterproof and meets low-formaldehyde emission standards (E0 or E1 grade).

The biggest risks are moisture absorption and physical impact. Balsa is extremely fragile and porous. You must mandate vacuum-sealed plastic packaging with desiccant packets inside double-walled corrugated master cartons. For LCL (Less than Container Load) shipments, ensure the pallets are top-load only to prevent crushing by heavier cargo.
