Every toy must have a label containing the manufacturer's name, address, brand name, model number, and the ISI mark with the license number. Additionally, it must include age grading (e.g., 'Not suitable for children under 36 months'), country of origin, and batch/lot information for traceability in case of a recall.

Electronic toys must adhere to IS 15644. You should check for battery compartment security (requiring a tool to open), voltage limits, and heat dissipation. Ensure the supplier uses high-quality circuit boards to prevent short circuits, which is a common cause for customs rejection or safety hazards.

The primary risk is Customs Seizure. The Indian government mandates that no toys can be imported without a valid BIS certificate. If the supplier's license has expired or the ISI mark is missing, the shipment will be detained, and you may face heavy penalties or mandatory re-exportation at your own expense.

Obtaining a BIS license involves factory audits and testing fees, which are expensive. When negotiating, clarify if the quoted price includes the royalty fees for using the ISI mark. For long-term partnerships, suggest a cost-sharing model for renewal fees or ask for a rebate on bulk orders exceeding 5,000 units to offset the initial certification investment.
