Ensure the feed contains a balanced Calcium-to-Phosphorus ratio to prevent skeletal issues during rapid weight gain.

Buyers must ensure the supplier adheres to ISO 22000 or HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) for food safety. It is critical to verify that the feed is free from prohibited antibiotics, melamine, and salmonella. Request a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for every batch and ensure the product meets the phytosanitary requirements of your specific country.

For pelletized feed, check the Pellet Durability Index (PDI); high-quality pellets should not crumble easily into dust (fines), as excessive fines lead to feed wastage and lower intake. The color should be consistent, and there should be no signs of mold, clumping, or rancid odors, which indicate high moisture content or poor storage.

Pelleted or crumbled feed is generally preferred for broilers as it prevents ingredient separation and improves feed conversion ratios (FCR) by reducing energy spent on eating. Crumble is ideal for the starter phase, while pellets are superior for the finisher phase to maximize growth rates and economic efficiency.

The biggest risks include fluctuating raw material costs (corn/soybean) and moisture damage during sea transit. To mitigate this, use moisture-proof packaging (PP/PE woven bags) and include silica gel desiccant in containers. Always use Trade Assurance or Letters of Credit (L/C) to secure your funds until the quality is verified.

Focus on long-term volume commitments rather than one-off purchases to secure 'VIP' pricing. Ask for tiered pricing based on tonnage and negotiate for customized formulations that might reduce costs by substituting expensive ingredients with locally available alternatives without sacrificing FCR.

Feed is a high-volume, low-margin product, so optimizing container load (FCL) is vital. Ensure the shipping line provides food-grade containers that are clean and dry. For long-distance shipping, confirm the inclusion of antioxidants and mold inhibitors in the feed formula to maintain nutritional integrity during the 30-45 day transit period.

You must provide a Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, and a Phytosanitary Certificate. Some regions also require a Non-GMO Certificate. Check your local Ministry of Agriculture guidelines before ordering, as poultry feed often requires a specific import permit prior to the vessel's arrival.
