CDR technologies generally fall into three categories: Direct Air Capture (DAC), which uses chemical fans and sorbents; Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS), involving biomass combustion; and Enhanced Weathering systems. For industrial buyers, DAC modules are the most scalable, while Biochar production units are the most economically feasible for agricultural integration.

Buyers must evaluate the Energy Intensity (GJ per ton of CO2 captured), Capture Efficiency (percentage of CO2 removed from the air stream), and the Sorbent/Solvent Lifespan. High-quality systems should demonstrate a capture purity of >95% if the CO2 is intended for utilization (CCUS) or permanent geological storage.

Equipment must adhere to ISO 14064 for greenhouse gas accounting and verification. For the hardware itself, ensure compliance with ISO 9001 for manufacturing quality and CE or UL certification for electrical components and pressure vessels. If the project aims to sell carbon credits, the equipment must meet the methodology requirements of registries like Verra or Gold Standard.

Maintenance focuses on filter/sorbent replacement cycles, which typically occur every 6 to 24 months depending on air quality. Moving parts like industrial fans and compressors require quarterly lubrication and vibration analysis. Ensure the supplier provides a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system for remote performance monitoring.

Request third-party verification reports from agencies like DNV or TÜV SÜD. Ensure the contract includes a Performance Guarantee Clause, where a portion of the payment is withheld until the system achieves the rated capture capacity during on-site commissioning.

Most CDR systems are shipped as skid-mounted modules or in ISO containers. Use DAP (Delivered at Place) or DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) Incoterms to ensure the supplier handles the complexities of transporting oversized industrial machinery. For sensitive chemical sorbents, ensure temperature-controlled shipping is utilized if required.

Check for eligibility under local green subsidies, such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (45Q tax credits) or the EU Green Deal. Conversely, be aware of Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanisms (CBAM) which may impact the total cost of ownership when importing carbon-intensive components.

Focus on Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) rather than just the initial purchase price. Negotiate for extended warranties on core components (e.g., 5+ years for capture membranes) and request technical training for local operators to be included in the package to ensure long-term operational success.
